__Memorial Day
Our annual tradition to honor Mothers is
Sunday, May 12. On this day, we make a
special effort to do nice things for our
Mother, or remember a Mother that has
passed away. The Mother’s Day tradition
began in the United States in 1914 and
has grown worldwide, although the date
is not the same in many countries. Gifts of
cards, flowers, perfume, jewelry and gift
cards head the list of items Moms will
receive. Mother’s Day is also the busiest
day of the year for long distance phone
calls. Children wear flowers to honor their
mothers; red for living Moms, white for
those deceased. The carnation is the
most popular flower for Mother’s Day.
McWherter Center will honor Mothers with
a special luncheon on Friday, May 10.
Bring Mom to lunch that day to show your
appreciation.
On Monday, May 27, we observe Memorial
Day. Originally observed on May 30 as
Decoration Day to honor those who served
in the Civil War, it has now evolved into a
day of remembrance for all who have
served in the United States Armed Forces.
Parades, speeches, picnics, barbecues,
and special programs are held around a
patriotic theme. American flags are the
prominent decoration for the day, and
wearing red, white and blue clothing is the
preferred attire. Flowers and flags are
placed on the graves of the deceased.
